Gearing up for Conventions.

I finished off my story for Fight Volume 2,

written by Jason Mehmel , a collaboration by a 

talented group of Artist, it will be coming out

at the Calgary convention.

April 18th brings me to the Vancouver Fan Expo.

 

I will be producing more work in the next

Joe Madureira Wolverine, Ink Study.

Joe Madureira has been a favourite Artist, since his early

"X-Men" work for Marvel Comics and "Battle Chasers"

for Cliffhanger-Image.

 This is my fifth attempt at inking another artists work.

It has been a very informative process and something

I've come to enjoy.

Most of the inks here were done with the

Kuretake synthetic brush pen. It still has

its sharp point, so well suited for this job.

 The chain links took the most time to do

on this piece.

 I left filling in the blacks for last.

A very cool page to complete.

at the Calgary Comic & Entertaiment Expo!

Supergirl and Black Widow.

Two today...inked sitting on the couch, not at home this day.

Very delicate lines on Supergirl, as drawn by David Finch.

Superman :Jim Lee Pencils.

Working in the longer strokes, refine for details.

Switching between the Kuretake brush and Winsor Newton.

Opaque white for highlights like smoke 

and lighting effects.

Finch-Spawn Ink Practice.

 This is my little invention, a tiny cup within a cup, used for inking.

I drilled two holes on a twist off lid of a dollar store container.

The smaller cup is a hairspray lid cover, two sizes fitted together,

so it is removable for cleaning. The larger container is for water.

The brush or nib is not over saturated using this method, keeping

a lighter touch when "loading" the brush.

 Brush stroke practices, line variation and control.

Inking is always something I enjoy doing, but I've only

inked my own work. I thought I would try an experiment,

inking another artist's pencils.

I chose Spawn drawn by Dave Finch,

who has a very organic line work that I can work with.

I started with the cape and hand.

Surprisingly, I can work faster on someone else s finished pencils.

The guess work is left out for the most part.

 I should be able to finish this in one sitting.

So far so good, figure is done.

Happy New Year!

 I've been working more with Sketchbook Pro

over the holidays. Learned more about using the tools

properly, and that has made a huge difference.

 I am creating new work for upcoming conventions,

still deciding on subjects/themes to draw.

Backpack and Joe.

What's my bag?

I paint and draw...

...what ever comes to mind, spontaneous

creativity, lit like candles burning bright,

but only last as long as the wax of inspiration.

Joe Kubert has been on my mind for the last couple of days.

 The influential Master comic Artist died on Sunday August 12th.

I have always enjoyed his illustrative work, the lush ink and brush

work...expressive lines. Unique and beautiful.

Hawkman, The Silent Knight, Enemy Ace, Sgt.Rock, Batman,

Punisher, Tor, Tarzan are just some of the books that come to mind,

that Kubert worked on. Kept in long boxes in the basement of my mind.

He will be missed.

Funny thing...I've thought  about Joe Kubert every week for the past year.

There is a man who looks like him, waiting at the train station, who I see

every other day. I have never spoken to him.

Walking by the beach at La Jolla California, I came upon Joe Kubert

looking out into the ocean. Out of respect, I did not disturb his quiet

moment with the world.

I talked to him a few days later at the San Diego Comic Convention,

about his part in bringing Filipino artist into the industry. He gave much of the 

credit to Joe Orlando and Carmine Infantino. He had high praise for the Filipino Artists.

I shook his hands and I walked away with a memory I will always treasure.
