FDC Day 28.

Last image for the month. It got me drawing more and playing

with more of my tools, and learning a little more.

All in all, a positive challenge.

What I would do differently, next time?

Create original images  just for the challenge,

and try a few more traditional media.

FDC day 27.

Inspired by spray paint art, for a background,

on Manga Studio. I can't pour paint on to the surface

or make active splatters with a flick of a brush.

Still a very cool tool.

FDC Day 12.

Getting a good "feel" for the tablet and 

Manga Studio. This was all done on

a Wednesday night after dinner.

I found myself mixing colours in my dreams,

is that a good thing? More tomorrow.

FDC Day 8.

Saturday afternoon drawings, worked from

Backpack and Joe.

What's my bag?

I paint and draw...

...what ever comes to mind, spontaneous

creativity, lit like candles burning bright,

but only last as long as the wax of inspiration.

Joe Kubert has been on my mind for the last couple of days.

 The influential Master comic Artist died on Sunday August 12th.

I have always enjoyed his illustrative work, the lush ink and brush

work...expressive lines. Unique and beautiful.

Hawkman, The Silent Knight, Enemy Ace, Sgt.Rock, Batman,

Punisher, Tor, Tarzan are just some of the books that come to mind,

that Kubert worked on. Kept in long boxes in the basement of my mind.

He will be missed.

Funny thing...I've thought  about Joe Kubert every week for the past year.

There is a man who looks like him, waiting at the train station, who I see

every other day. I have never spoken to him.

Walking by the beach at La Jolla California, I came upon Joe Kubert

looking out into the ocean. Out of respect, I did not disturb his quiet

moment with the world.

I talked to him a few days later at the San Diego Comic Convention,

about his part in bringing Filipino artist into the industry. He gave much of the 

credit to Joe Orlando and Carmine Infantino. He had high praise for the Filipino Artists.

I shook his hands and I walked away with a memory I will always treasure.

Convention Box 2012

This is drawn with oil based SHARPIES, on a fold out,

wheeled office box, with a pull out handle.

Something for getting my stuff around the convention.

I am attempting to scale down the amount of material

I bring to the shows and lighten my load.

Garfield is for my boys, who've been reading

the books and watching the cartoons.

The rest is all for fun and going with the flow.

Coffee Break Doodles.

It has been a little while since the last post...

very busy at work, but I get a few minutes to sketch

on my coffee breaks.

These are done in a wide format sketchbook.

No structure form beneath, straight inks, red tones added after.

Next month (February) I'll be attempting a doodle/sketch a day.

Lastly, this is my new sketchbook bag on the side flap.

I am debating on adding spot colour. What do you think?

Another box on the go...this one for a sketchbook.

I started with a base of white acrylic wash

over a rough pencil sketch. 

Followed by pencil crayons blended with

turpentine and a brush.

Details in black pencil crayons and lines

applied with brush and India ink.

A high gloss varnish will be applied on the finished image.

Hardware and other features to follow.

A beautiful sunrise on a Monday morning...

I had to take a few pictures and have a little fun with

Photoshop today.

 A friend of mine was also taking pictures at about the same time...

I hope she had a "Happy Birthday (MCS)"

Goblin Market Process

Preliminary sketches were done. Elements moved around.

After settling on layout, tighter lines were done

then printed in blue line on 11" X 17" comic board.

 

Inking, keeping it loose and spontaneous.

Colours took the longest, since I can be overly

picky about choices, leading to many retouches.

I am happy with the results.

Kid Roughs: Painting.

Almost done, a few more touch ups to do.

Paint Exploration.

I finished very few coloured paintings last year.

The goal for the new year is to create more finished work,

and improve, learn more about my tools.

The picture above is an image from my sketchbook,

playing around with paints on Photoshop.

I've never taken a formal course, so everything is

trial and error. I've got to explore more artist

resources on this program. If you have any recommendations

for tutorials, let me know.

Second one, done tonight on Painter 11.

(256) Wind Mobility Mural.

This mural work kept me busy for a few days.

This was a team effort, led by William Lazos,

who has done some amazing work.

This was the building after two days of work.

Conditions was less than ideal, low temperatures

thickened paints and brushes, duct tape into shreds,

and adhesives not to stick. Heat guns came in handy.

Paint would start as a liquid, then the consistency of

yogurt, then tooth paste,then glue, then hard ice cream.

We got it done in five days. It warmed up enough

on the very last day. I would do it again, but

maybe wait for warmer weather.

This was the last bit of detail we finished off.

Elana Busan and I got it down to the wire,

with enough time for clean up. Additional

help was provided by fellow Calgary

Artist Dale Bott.

The painting will be up until Spring, another one

will follow...could be a surprise?

(244) Roller and Stencil.

I used the paper cut out, from one of the stars, as

a stencil, applying tempera paint with a roller

on white card stock,

I painted ten to make two sets of stars.
